OneCape 2024: Innovation and Infrastructure

OneCape 2024 highlighted new data-driven initiatives and advancements in infrastructure that will shape the region’s future.

From improving safety on the region’s roads to preparing for the replacement of the Sagamore and Bourne bridges, key projects are underway to enhance Cape Cod’s transportation network. Roadway safety is a long-standing priority of the Cape Cod Commission. Transportation Program Manager Colleen Medeiros shared information on Vision Zero, a project funded by a federal Safe Streets for All Grant that will result in strategies to reduce or eliminate roadway fatalities on Cape Cod.

Replacement of the Sagamore and Bourne bridges is on the horizon, and now that funding has been secured to replace the Sagamore Bridge, staff from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and consultant HNTB participated in a breakout session providing updates and outlining next steps on this once-in-a-generation infrastructure project.

Commission transportation staff have spent the last two years collecting and analyzing data in downtown Chatham, assessing parking and circulation to improve safety and overall traffic flow in the busy downtown area. Senior Transportation Planner David Nolan presented data collected in key areas and outlined potential solutions.

The Summit also addressed the region’s digital future, as Deputy Director Steven Tupper outlined the recently released Broadband Needs Assessment and led a panel discussion on municipal digital planning efforts taking place in several Cape Cod towns.
