During a meeting held on November 18, 2024, the Cape Cod Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) released the Federal Fiscal Year (FFY) 2025-2029 Transportation Improvement Program (TIP) Amendment 2 for a 21-day public review and comment period. The Cape Cod Commission is developing a Vision Zero Action Plan for Cape Cod to identify and eliminate fatalities and serious injuries from vehicle crashes for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and drivers. A series of public meetings designed to educate and inform the public about the plan and gather feedback will take place in November.

The Cape Cod Commission invites the public to attend the first Cape Cod Vision Zero Action Plan virtual public meeting on September 24, 2024, at 12:00 pm.

Addressing the challenges of downtown Chatham’s parking and traffic flow, Commission staff proposed a range of potential solutions at a meeting held on July 30, 2024, aimed at improving parking, safety, and multimodal accommodations along Main Street.

The Cape Cod Vision Zero Action Plan, a pathway to a safer future, will include a systematic crash analysis and set of solutions to tackle the root causes of all crashes, emphasizing those involving bicyclists, pedestrians, and other non-motorists. The Action Plan will consider a range of low-cost, high-impact regional strategies such as bike light distribution, updated pedestrian signal equipment, and significant infrastructure improvements at key locations. Completing the Action Plan will make all fifteen Cape Cod towns eligible for Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) Implementation Grants to leverage federal funding to implement strategies.

The Cape Cod Commission is seeking public input as we develop a Vision Zero Action Plan for Cape Cod to identify and eliminate fatalities and serious injuries from vehicle crashes for pedestrians, bicyclists, transit users, and drivers. Roadway users are encouraged to share their thoughts about roadway safety using an online, interactive public comment tool developed by the Commission and consultant Kimley-Horn to identify locations with safety concerns or where crashes or near-crashes have happened.

Improving safety along Cape Cod’s roadways is a key component of the Cape Cod Commission’s transportation work, and now even more is being done as the Commission is developing a Vision Zero Action Plan for the region.

Funded by a federal Safe Streets for All (SS4A) grant awarded in January 2022, Vision Zero is a vision to eliminate roadway fatalities and serious injuries on the nation’s roadways. In partnership with local, state and federal stakeholders, and assistance from our consultant, the Commission will develop a Vision Zero Action Plan and High Injury Network for Cape Cod.

The Cape Cod Commission’s transportation department provides data collection services to all 15 towns in the region. To help with data collection for internal studies and requests from towns, the Cape Cod Commission hires summer traffic technicians to perform a variety of data collection efforts throughout the region.
