Resilient Cape Cod: Stakeholders to help craft coastal planning tool
A Cape-wide stakeholder process to help develop a data-rich tool for coastal resiliency planning begins December 11, 2017.
In 2016, the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) awarded a three-year, $780,000 grant to the Cape Cod Commission and partners to develop a tool and public outreach program to investigate the environmental and socio-economic effects of local and regional coastal resiliency strategies.
Outreach and tool development center on a stakeholder process with regional working groups representing a range of constituencies, and their interests and concerns. The stakeholder subregions are organized by water body: Buzzards Bay, Nantucket Sound, Cape Cod Bay and Outer Cape.
The grant is funded through NOAA’s Regional Coastal Resilience Grant program, which supports regional-scale projects that enhance the resilience of coastal communities and economies to the effects of extreme weather, climate hazards, and changing ocean conditions.
The Commission serves as the lead agency for the effort, and is working with grant partners Association to Preserve Cape Cod, Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Preserve, and the Town of Barnstable. Supporting agencies include Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution Sea Grant Program, Provincetown Center for Coastal Studies and the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management.
