Three towns launch Commission-supported open data platform
The Cape Cod Commission announced the launch of a new cloud-based platform in partnership with OpenGov, the leader in government performance management, to increase government accountability and improve access to important public information. The Commission, which serves as the regional land use planning, economic development, and regulatory agency for Barnstable County, helped coordinate the platform launch in Yarmouth, Provincetown, Sandwich and Falmouth. Chatham is in development and expects to launch in the near future.
“The Commission relies on technology to further its mission in supporting communities and decision-making across the region,” Executive Director Paul Niedzwiecki said. “The partnership with OpenGov will help pilot towns achieve a level of transparency that residents increasingly expect.”
The platform, powered by OpenGov’s Smart Government CloudTM, will help the Cape Cod towns simplify their budget planning, improve internal data management, and make important information easily accessible to residents, elected officials and administrators. By letting residents track how their tax dollars are being spent, the platform builds greater trust in government and facilitates increased civic engagement.
“Through this Cape-wide working partnership, we can all bring transparency to the public’s business and efficiency to our operations,” said Provincetown Town Manager David B. Panagore. “Provincetown’s growing on-line presence has provided a better window into our operations and now with OpenGov we can offer public access to our financial information says.”
The platform also allows users to download data and share over email and social media.
“We’re excited to partner with the Cape Cod Commission to harness the power of technology to increase government effectiveness and accountability across these five communities,” said OpenGov CEO Zac Bookman. “Whether improving bike lanes or repaving streets, public officials are now able to easily report and track financial information, and local residents can see how their tax dollars are being spent.”
The Cape Cod Commission joins more than 1,500 local governments nationwide using OpenGov’s cloud software.
