Cape Cod Commission helps to create Complete Streets
Whether you’re driving, riding, bicycling, or walking, sometimes navigating streets on Cape Cod can be a challenge. Through the State’s MassDOT Complete Streets Municipal Funding Program, the Cape Cod Commission is working with several Cape Cod towns to help improve safety and accessibility along our roadways.
With funding provided by the Massachusetts Department of Transportation, the towns of Orleans, Eastham, Bourne, Falmouth, and Brewster have retained the services of the Cape Cod Commission to develop a Complete Streets Prioritization Plan. The towns of Sandwich and Mashpee have also completed Prioritization Plans.
A “Complete Street” is one that provides safe and accessible options for all travel modes – walking, biking, transit, and vehicles – for people of all ages and abilities.
Creating a Complete Streets Prioritization Plan includes exploring transportation improvement alternatives that will reduce conflicts, improve traffic flow, and incorporate multi-modal transportation options while furthering the creation of vibrant, pedestrian and bicycle oriented mixed-use centers.
Currently, the Commission is working with the Town of Falmouth on its Complete Streets Prioritization plan. A virtual public meeting was held in January, and a public comment is open now through February 5, 2021.
A new, interactive public comment tool is available. The tool allows a user to easily identify areas of town that are challenging for motor vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders. To use the tool, simply enter an address or use the map to zoom in to a specific area. Next, select a mode of travel from the menu on the right and click on the map to drop a pin. Add your comments and suggestions to the box that appears.
Public comments can also be sent via email to colleen.medeiros@capecodcommission.org, or by calling 508-744-1226.
Input gathered will help the Cape Cod Commission understand the multimodal issues and opportunities in Falmouth. Based on the information from this meeting, improvements in Falmouth will be listed in a Prioritization Plan that will help the town gain access to state and federal funding.
