The 2024 CEDS - Planning for Cape Cod's economic future

As a federal Economic Development Administration (EDA)-designated Economic Development District, Cape Cod is required to develop a Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) every five years. With the current plan set to expire in 2024, work is underway to lay the groundwork for a renewed strategy to support a strong and vibrant Cape Cod.

Studying the economic impacts of long-term bridge closures

Built in 1935, the Bourne and Sagamore bridges span the Cape Cod Canal and connect residents, businesses, and visitors on the Cape and Islands to the mainland. The bridges are essential for general transportation, freight, and tourism, and, in an emergency, are critical routes for evacuation.

The Cape Cod Commission has contracted with consultant Eastern Research Group, Inc (ERG) to conduct an economic analysis to better understand the impact a long-term bridge shutdown would have on the region’s economy.

Taking steps to address Cape Cod's childcare shortage

The Cape Cod Commission's Early Education and Childcare Needs Assessment offers recommendations designed to help strengthen the region's early education and care infrastructure. It also outlines high-impact investment areas that can support quality, consistent education and care for all families.  During the November Barnstable County Economic Development Council meeting, Senator Susan Moran outlined legislative actions and funding priorities designed to address the state’s early education and childcare needs. Senator Moran was joined by Cindy Horgan, a longtime early education and childcare advocate, currently serving as Executive Director of Cape Cod Children’s Place.
